So you've decided to do it. You're flying solo with a little one 🙌

First things first, you've absolutely got this. Solo travel with a baby or toddler is equal parts chaotic and completely doable, and thousands of parents do it every single day. A bit of preparation goes a long way, and once you're through those airport doors, you'll surprise yourself with how capable you are.

Here are our top airport survival tips to make the whole experience a lot less stressful (and maybe even a little fun 😅).

1. Pack Your Bag Like a Pro

The golden rule of solo travel with kids: everything needs a place, and that place needs to be easy to access with one hand while you're wrangling a toddler with the other.

Your carry-on is your lifeline. Pack snacks, wipes, a change of clothes, and entertainment within easy reach. The last thing you want is to be digging through a bottomless bag at the gate with a screaming baby on your hip.

A well-organised baby bag is genuinely a game-changer here. We're talking dedicated compartments, a built-in wipes dispenser, and a change mat that doesn't require a degree to locate. The HuddoCo Anywhere Backpack was literally designed for this moment, hands-free carry, thoughtful pockets, and it looks good doing it 🎒

2. Get to the Airport Early (Like, Really Early)

We know, we know. But trust us on this one.

With a little one in tow, everything just takes longer. Nappy changes, security screenings, finding the family lane, locating the nearest café for a sanity coffee ☕, it all adds up. Give yourself a generous buffer and you'll feel a lot calmer when things (inevitably) take a little longer than planned.

Most airports also have priority lanes for families, so make sure you look for the signs and use them. You've earned that perk.

3. Use a Carrier Through Security

This is one of those tips that sounds small but makes a genuinely huge difference.

If your baby or toddler is comfortable in a carrier, put them in it for the security line. You'll have both hands free to manage your bags, your shoes, your laptop, all of it. Most security staff are understanding, but it's worth confirming with them whether they'd like you to remove bub before going through the scanner.

Strollers go through the X-ray machine, so folding them down quickly is a skill worth practising before you get to the airport 😅

4. Snacks Are Your Secret Weapon

Never underestimate the power of a well-timed snack.

Pack more than you think you need. Airports have delays, queues have surprise additions, and toddlers have moods that arrive without warning. Having a stash of their favourite snacks on hand can be the difference between a meltdown and a manageable moment.

Bonus points if you pack snacks that aren't too crumbly, sticky, or smelly for those close-quarter moments in the terminal 🙏

5. Let Them Move Before You Board

If you've got time before your flight, let your little one burn some energy.

Walk the terminal, find an open space, let them run. A toddler who's had a chance to move around is a much more settled toddler on the plane. Many airports also have dedicated kids' play areas, and a quick Google before you fly can help you track these down.

The more energy they use now, the better your chances of a peaceful flight 🤞

6. Board Early (But Maybe Not Too Early)

Most airlines offer families with young children the chance to board early. In theory, this is wonderful. In practice, it means more time in a small space before takeoff.

Our hot take? Let the chaos of general boarding settle, then get on. You avoid the crowd, your little one isn't sitting on a stationary plane for 20 minutes, and you still get settled before the doors close. Win-win. ✈️

7. Be Kind to Yourself

Solo travel with a baby or toddler is genuinely impressive. You are doing something hard, and you deserve to feel good about that.

Things will go sideways at some point, a nappy situation at the worst moment, a tantrum in the middle of security, a delay that throws the whole routine off. Roll with it. Most people in that airport have been there or will be there. You're not the first, and you won't be the last.

You've got this. And the destination is absolutely worth it 🌍
